Auckland Airport (AKL)
AKL has separate International and Domestic terminals connected by a free inter-terminal bus (5 min) or a 10-minute walk. Transfer drivers meet in the Arrivals hall of your terminal.
No rail connection to the airport (planned for 2030s). The SkyBus is the main public transport option.
SkyBus to City Centre: NZ$18, 45-60 min. Runs every 10-15 min during the day, every 30 min at night. Last bus around midnight.
Auckland taxis are metered, safe, and honest. Airport to CBD costs NZD 60-80. New Zealand has excellent taxi regulation.
Kiwitaxi — Fixed pricing for NZ routes. Good for transfers to Hobbiton (2 hrs), Rotorua, or Coromandel.
GetTransfer — Bids from NZD 40 ($24) to CBD. Cheaper than metered taxis.

Uber works at Auckland Airport with a designated pickup area. Well-established in NZ.
SkyBus (40-60 min to CBD, NZD 18/$11) runs every 15 min. Cheap and reliable but slow with many stops.
Biosecurity at the border: New Zealand has strict biosecurity rules. Anything organic (food, hiking boots with soil, wooden items) must be declared. This can add 15-30 minutes to your arrival time — your driver will wait.
Driving distances in NZ: Auckland is spread out — Viaduct Harbour, Ponsonby, and the CBD are close, but North Shore or Waiheke Island ferry terminal may be 30-45 minutes. Confirm your exact destination with the driver.
No rail, no fuss: Auckland lacks an airport train (planned for the 2030s), making taxis, shuttles, and pre-booked transfers the main options. The SkyBus is good but only goes to the CBD.
Jet lag consideration: If you're arriving from Europe or the Americas, you've been traveling 24+ hours. A pre-booked transfer with a driver waiting for you is worth the premium — navigating an unfamiliar city exhausted is no fun.
SkyBus wins for: Solo travelers to the CBD, budget-conscious travelers, daytime arrivals. At NZ$18 with runs every 10-15 minutes, it's efficient and comfortable.
Pre-booked transfer wins for: Groups of 2+ (split the cost), families with children (car seats), hotels outside the CBD (North Shore, Ponsonby, Parnell), late-night arrivals after midnight when SkyBus frequency drops. Also ideal for travelers heading directly to Hobbiton, Waitomo, or Rotorua — services offer long-distance transfers.

SIM / connectivity: NZ SIM cards from Spark, Vodafone, or 2degrees at AKL. Tourist SIMs from NZ$29 for 1.5GB data.
Tip 1: SkyBus at $11 is good for solo travelers. For 2+ people, Uber or a pre-booked transfer is comparable per person.
Tip 2: Auckland traffic can be surprisingly bad, especially on the Southern Motorway during rush hour.
Tip 3: For transfers to Hobbiton (2 hrs), Waitomo Caves (2.5 hrs), or Coromandel Peninsula (2.5 hrs), pre-booking is the only option.
Tip 4: Auckland is NZ's gateway. Most visitors pick up rental cars at the airport — transfers are mainly for city stays.
