Ngurah Rai International (DPS)
Bali airport taxis are controlled by a cooperative with inflated fixed rates. For a detailed comparison of pre-booked transfer services, see our side-by-side comparison of all 4 platforms for Bali.
Essentially none. Bali has no rail or reliable bus network. Private transportation is how everyone gets around.
Bali has no public transport: Unlike most destinations, Bali has essentially no public bus or train network. Your options are: pre-booked transfer, official taxi counter, Grab, or your hotel's shuttle. This makes pre-booking especially valuable — you can't just "figure it out" on arrival.
The airport taxi mafia: Bali's airport is controlled by a taxi cooperative with fixed (non-negotiable) prices. These are higher than Grab or pre-booked services. Outside the airport perimeter, Grab prices drop significantly — but you can't get a Grab inside the airport grounds.
Distance matters hugely: Kuta is 3 km (10 min). Seminyak is 10 km (25 min). Canggu is 18 km (40 min). Ubud is 37 km (60-90 min). Transfer prices scale with distance — confirm your exact accommodation location.
Road conditions: Bali roads are narrow, often congested, and can be rough — especially the road to Ubud. Potholes and motorbike traffic are common. A comfortable vehicle matters for the longer rides.

Currency: IDR (rupiah) / USD accepted at airport. Have some local currency for small purchases — many taxi meters display in local currency.
Language: Indonesian and Balinese (basic English in tourist areas) Having your hotel address saved on your phone (screenshot or Google Maps pin) is always helpful for drivers.
Tipping: IDR 20,000-50,000 (~$1.50-3) for drivers is appreciated.
Safety: Use only the official taxi counter inside Arrivals or pre-booked services. Touts outside are persistent — walk past them to the official area. Grab is reliable for return trips.
SIM / connectivity: Indonesian SIM cards (Telkomsel, XL) at DPS Arrivals. Tourist SIMs from IDR 50,000 (~$3) for 10GB.
Tip 1: Bali's official airport taxi cooperative charges fixed rates that are 2-3× what Grab would charge for the same route. Pre-booking is strongly recommended.
Tip 2: Traffic in southern Bali (Kuta, Seminyak, Canggu) is terrible during afternoon rush (3-7pm). A 10 km trip to Seminyak can take 60+ minutes.
Tip 3: For Ubud transfers (37 km), expect 60-90 minutes depending on traffic. The route is scenic but there's no fast highway.
Tip 4: Most Bali accommodation offers free or cheap airport pickup — check with your hotel before booking separately. Villa rentals almost always arrange pickup.
