Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK)
RAK is a small airport just 6 km from the medina. Single terminal, very compact. The Arrivals hall is small — you'll see drivers immediately upon exiting. The drive to the medina takes 15-25 minutes but the last stretch through narrow streets can be slow.
No rail connection to the airport (the nearest train station is Marrakech Gare, in the new city).
Bus 19 to Jemaa el-Fnaa (the main square): MAD 30 (~$3), 20-30 min. Runs every 20-30 min but unreliable.
Marrakech taxi negotiation is an art form. Meters exist but drivers rarely use them for tourists. Expect to haggle. Pre-booking eliminates the negotiation entirely.
Kiwitaxi — Fixed prices from ~$8 to the medina. No haggling, no surprises. Air-conditioned vehicles.
GetTransfer — Bids from $6 to the medina. Cheapest reliable option.

Uber does not operate in Morocco. Careem has limited presence. Pre-booking or metered/negotiated taxis are your options.
Bus 19 (30 min to Jemaa el-Fna, MAD 30/$3) runs every 30 min. Cheap but can be crowded.
The haggling culture: In Marrakech, negotiation is part of daily life — including with taxi drivers. If you don't pre-book, you WILL need to negotiate the fare. The official rate to the medina is MAD 70-100, but drivers routinely ask 150-200. Having a pre-booked transfer avoids this entirely.
Medina access: Cars cannot enter the old medina. Your driver will drop you at the nearest gate (bab). Bab Jdid and Bab Doukkala are common drop-off points. You may need to walk 5-10 minutes through narrow alleys to your riad — your hotel can arrange a porter to meet you at the gate.
French helps: Marrakech was a French protectorate — French is widely spoken alongside Arabic and Berber. English is limited outside the tourist areas. Having your riad name in French/Arabic helps the driver.
Dirham cash: Morocco uses the dirham (MAD). ATMs at the airport offer good rates. Have cash for tips, small purchases, and just in case. Credit cards are accepted at hotels and tourist restaurants but not everywhere.

Currency: MAD (dirham). Have some local currency for small purchases — many taxi meters display in local currency.
Language: Arabic and French (limited English) Having your hotel address saved on your phone (screenshot or Google Maps pin) is always helpful for drivers.
Tipping: MAD 20-30 (~$2-3) for drivers. Expected and appreciated.
Safety: Marrakech petit taxis rarely use meters for tourists. Negotiate the fare BEFORE getting in, or better yet, pre-book. The agreed fare to the medina should be MAD 70-100 — drivers will ask for 150-200.
SIM / connectivity: Moroccan SIM cards from Maroc Telecom, Inwi, or Orange at RAK. Tourist SIMs from MAD 30 (~$3) for 5GB.
Tip 1: Marrakech airport is close to the medina (6 km) but negotiating a taxi fare can be stressful after a long flight.
Tip 2: Pre-booking for $6-8 eliminates the negotiation entirely — worth it for peace of mind.
Tip 3: Many riads in the medina are in narrow alleys where cars can't enter. Your driver will drop you at the nearest accessible point.
Tip 4: For day trips to the Atlas Mountains, Essaouira (2.5 hrs), or Sahara (10 hrs), pre-booked transfers are the only practical option.
