Guide
The question most travelers face at every airport: should you pre-book a transfer or just grab a taxi? The answer depends on where you're flying to, how many people you're with, and what time you land.
Airports with taxi scams. Istanbul, Cairo, Bangkok, Rome, Cancún, and many others have well-documented taxi scam problems. A pre-booked transfer with a fixed price eliminates this entirely. See our worst airports for taxi scams guide.
Late-night arrivals. Taxi availability drops after midnight at most airports. Pre-booked transfers guarantee a driver waiting for you at 3am. See our night transfers guide.
Groups of 3+. A pre-booked minivan costs about the same as a single taxi but carries 4-6 people. The per-person savings are dramatic.
Long routes. For transfers over 30 minutes, pre-booked prices are usually lower than metered taxis. The meter adds up fast.
Peace of mind. After a long flight, knowing someone is waiting with your name is genuinely worth a few extra dollars. No queue, no negotiation, no meter anxiety.
Short routes in safe cities. London, Tokyo, Singapore, Zurich — cities with regulated, honest taxi systems where the airport is close to the city center. A metered taxi costs the same or less than a pre-booked transfer.
Solo travelers on budget. If you're alone and the route is short, a taxi is the simplest option. No booking, no app, just hop in and go.
Spontaneous travel. If you don't know when you're arriving or where you're going, a taxi offers maximum flexibility.
London Heathrow to central London: Black cab £60-90 vs pre-booked £40-60 — transfer wins.
Tokyo Narita to central Tokyo: Taxi ¥20,000-30,000 ($135-200) vs pre-booked $90-130 — transfer wins significantly.
Rome Fiumicino to city center: Official taxi €50 (fixed) vs pre-booked €35-55 — roughly equal.
Barcelona El Prat to city center: Taxi €39 (fixed) vs pre-booked €25-40 — transfer often cheaper.
In 2026, pre-booked transfers beat taxis in most scenarios. The price gap has narrowed (and often favors transfers), while the convenience gap has widened. The only reliable taxi wins are in cities with excellent taxi regulation AND short airport routes. For everywhere else — especially high-scam-risk airports, late-night arrivals, and groups — pre-booking is the smarter choice.
