Tipping customs for airport transfer drivers vary widely around the world. With a pre-booked transfer (where you've already paid the full fare online), tipping is almost never mandatory — but it's often appreciated. Here's a practical breakdown by region.

The Short Answer

If the driver was friendly, helpful with luggage, and got you there safely: tip €2-5 or equivalent in local currency. If the service was just okay: no tip needed. If something went wrong: definitely don't tip — report the issue to the platform instead.

Europe

Western Europe (UK, France, Spain, Italy, Germany): Tipping is not expected but appreciated. Rounding up to the nearest €5 or leaving €2-3 is a nice gesture. In the UK, 10% is common but not obligatory.

Eastern Europe (Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Balkans): Tipping is more common. €2-3 or rounding up is standard. Drivers generally earn less here, so tips are more meaningful.

Turkey: Rounding up or 5-10% is customary. Turkish drivers often help extensively with luggage and expect a small tip.

Southeast Asia

Thailand: Tipping is not expected in Thai culture but appreciated from tourists. 50-100 THB (€1.50-3) is generous.

Bali / Indonesia: Similar to Thailand. 20,000-50,000 IDR (€1.20-3) is a kind gesture.

Vietnam: Small tips (50,000 VND / €2) are appreciated but not expected with pre-booked transfers.

Middle East

Dubai / UAE: Tipping is common. 10-20 AED (€2.50-5) is standard. Drivers in Dubai generally provide very polished service.

Egypt: Tipping is very much expected. 50-100 EGP (€1-2) minimum. Egyptian drivers often go above and beyond with luggage help.

Americas

USA: Tipping is essentially mandatory. 15-20% of the fare or $5-10 minimum. This is the one region where not tipping is considered rude.

Mexico: 50-100 MXN (€2.50-5) is standard and appreciated.

When NOT to Tip

Don't feel obligated to tip if: the driver was rude or unprofessional, the vehicle was dirty or in poor condition, the driver took a deliberately longer route, or the driver tried to add extra charges on top of your pre-paid fare. In these cases, report the issue through the booking platform.

How to Tip When You Don't Have Local Currency

This is the most common practical problem with tipping transfer drivers. You've just landed, haven't been to an ATM yet, and your driver did a great job. A few solutions: many drivers appreciate euros or US dollars even in non-euro/non-dollar countries — these are universally useful currencies. A €5 note works as a tip in most of the world.

If you have absolutely no cash, you can tell the driver you'd like to tip but don't have local currency. Most will understand — the pre-paid transfer fare already compensates them. Some platforms allow you to add a tip through the app or booking system after the ride (Welcome Pickups does this).

Planning ahead helps: withdraw a small amount of local currency at the airport ATM before meeting your driver, or carry a few small-denomination euro/dollar notes specifically for tipping during travel days.

Tipping Etiquette for Different Situations

For standard airport-to-hotel transfers, the guidelines above apply. But some situations warrant a more generous tip. If the driver waited a long time due to your delayed flight (beyond the standard free waiting period), an extra €3–5 acknowledges their patience. If the driver helped with an unusual amount of luggage — ski equipment, surfboards, multiple car seats — a slightly larger tip is appropriate.

For long-distance transfers (city-to-city, 2+ hours), tipping closer to 10–15% of the fare is reasonable if the service was good. These trips require more of the driver's time and fuel, and a proportional tip is fair.

For group transfers (minibus or bus), a single tip from the group is fine — you don't need each person to tip individually. €5–10 from the whole group is typically appreciated.
